There are several poetic things about this video and this performance which I had the good fortune to capture on the east side express trains recently:
The rhythm is so perfectly correspondent to the pace and vigor of the moving train.
The young boy standing near the two drummers was moving with them from car to car and although you can’t see it when I capture his face in this video, he studied them -every gesture, every word, every glance- for almost the entire time they played. Clearly oral tradition and truly tactile and functional learning is alive and well. It is being passed from one generation to the next with both humility and pride.
What a spontaneous celebration!
Of more particular interest to me is the unaffected woman in the distance who continues to read her Kindle while trying actively to remain unaffected by the unavoidable visceral addiction being displayed in front of her.
Blessed be this miracle.
