Vince Peterson currently offers private music instruction and group masterclasses or lectures to adult students. He's happy to offer referrals for younger students to some of the best teachers in NYC for piano, voice, theory, and musicianship.
Studying music privately has long been considered the best way to improve musicianship. Private lessons remove the stigma of performing in front of others from the primary learning environment. They also allow a personal, confidential, and safe space for students to discuss their dreams, hopes, fears, and concerns with a trusted advisor.

Lessons will be focused on developing your compositional voice and eliminating fear from the writing process. Exercises in compositional technique, including voice leading, counterpoint, and orchestration, will support this work. Vince can also advise students on the business side of composition: commissions, networking, and publishing.
Many years of experience back up Vince’s lessons in arranging. Whether vocal or instrumental, lessons will help make your project as musically successful as it can be, with an ear for structure, voice leading, and orchestration.
Lessons are taught in the rigorous tradition of French fixed-do solfège and may include rhythm exercises, clef study, score reading, dictation, and counterpoint. Whatever your level of entry, you will improve your fluency and speed of reading music.
Career Coaching and Planning
If you need a dedicated space to think about where you want to take your career, Vince can guide you through the important questions and offer practical advice based on his decades as a professional musician. Conversations that seek out your highest priorities and your greatest gifts will be followed by strategic thinking about how to realize your goals, from performing to publishing.
Topics covered may include species counterpoint, 18th-century voice leading, figured bass, and basic Schenkerian analysis. Lessons will improve your ear for large musical structures.
Lessons will encompass technical work on gesture, philosophical work on the role of the conductor, and personal work on removing ego from the rehearsal room. They will also cover thoroughly the process of research, score study, and preparation for conducting.
